Finding a Cure Through Discovery Based Sciences

The UAB Bioanalytical and Mass Spectrometry Shared Facility

Our facility is based at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) within the Department of Surgery, Division of Urology. UAB is one of the most clinically active communities in the nation, with a highly recognized and respected School of Medicine and Comprehensive Cancer Center, dozens of Research Centers, four active SPORE programs including that of Breast, Brain, Ovarian, & Pancreatic.

The lab was initiated in 2006 from the a very inspired Chair of Urology, Dr. Christopher Amling, the Director of the facility Dr. James Mobley, and the Director of Surgery Dr. Kirby Bland. The goal at that time was to develop the first clinical proteomic facility within the Division of Urology in the Nation. We have now expanded to offer services to researches campus wide.

We now operate as two separate laboratories:

1) As a university wide mass spectrometry laboratory, offering the latest in proteomics tools, small molecule analysis, and informatics.

2) As a high level Urologic Research Lab focused on Urologic malignancies.

We have actively strived to integrate into the unique environment at UAB to enhance the primary bases for our research, which is to 1) identify clinically significant and non-invasive biomarkers for early detection of disease, and 2) to identify highly efficacious novel therapeutics.

In order to accomplish these goals in the most effective way, we have partnered with various clinical groups, basic science labs, and commercial ventures in order to pull together a highly vigorous translational research program in Urology and throughout the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

We would like to thank the various contributors which have aided and continued to financially support this lab, including the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Department of Surgery, the School of Medicine, and the UAB Health Services Foundation (HSF).
